Elk Grove Community and Local Authorities Divided Over Casino Controversy

Share

The issue of whether to push forward the Wilton Rancheria Casino project has turned into a recent bone of contention in Elk Grove. The City Council is coming under pressure to grant citizens a direct vote over the matter but a decision has been delayed until Feb. 8.

Meanwhile, two major campaigns to shape public opinion on the casino project have been launched in the city. The Council on Prosperity and Accountability are sponsoring Facebook and TV adverts against the Elk Grove casino while business circles and supporters of the idea maintain that the casino could create up to 3,500 jobs and bring sustainable revenue to the local economy.

According to Elk Grove City official Jason Lindgren, in the event that a special election on the project is approved, that will amount to anywhere between $1 million and $1.8 million. It remains to be seen whether the democratic vote approach would be backed up regardless of the expense.
