Deputy Shoots Driver of Stolen Vehicle at San Manuel Casino Parking

A man was shot by a deputy and a woman suffered significant injuries at the San Manuel Casino parking while trying to escape in a stolen car, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The incident began at 7:53 PM when a signal of a stolen vehicle in the vicinity of Highland and Victoria Avenues was received by the authorities. The car was spotted by deputies at the San Manuel Casino parking lot with a man and woman inside. When the officers decided to intervene, the driver started the vehicle and struck a deputy while another one fired a shot, injuring the man. The chase ended with the car crashing into two other vehicles and a barrier.

According to officials, the man behind the wheel was Michael Russo, 31, of Riverside. His injuries proved to be fatal and he later passed away in hospital. The woman was identified as Ath Pen, 44, of Fresno. She has remained hospitalized for treatment.

The shooting is currently being investigated by the Specialized Investigations Division.
